Thanks to a high pressure system over Japan on this last day of winter season, clear sky covered all over Fukushima including Adatara Mountains. True sky over Mount Adatara was not an exception as shown above, which was viewed from Chieko-Ohashi Bridge at Nihonmatsu City. The bridge over the Abukuma River was named after an artist Chieko from this city, who described the sky over Mount Adatara as a "true sky". The location is 16-minute local bus ride from JR Nihonmatsu Station.

I also stopped at Kasumigajo Castle Park in the city, where I hiked on top of Nihonmatsu Castle ruins called Tenshudai. From the height of 345m above sea level, I could also see snow-capped Adatara Mountains under the true sky. Tenshudai is located about 30-minute walk from JR Nihonmatsu Station.

At the entrance of Kasumigajo Castle Park (a National Historic Site), there was a memorial statue of boy soldiers as shown above, all of whom under 17 years old fought against New Government forces in Boshin Civil War (1868) and were defeated. The park includes all the Nihonmatsujo Castle ruins and grounds.

Snow scenery at Minamiaizu Town, Feb. 22, 2017 (南会津の雪景色 2017年2月22日)

P2223281 (560x420)
Today I visited Minamiaizu Town which is located in the southern area of Aizu Region. Aizu Railway runs through the area and the railroad track extends all the way to Asakusa Tokyo. Photo above shows snow scenery at Okuaizu History Museum which is about 20-minute walk from Sansondojo Station. An old tea house and traditional farmers' houses are preserved in this complex, all of which are from Edo Period more than 200 years ago. All the houses were covered with deep snow today due to heavy snowfall over the past few days. The old tea house in the picture is called Sannojaya which was originally located at Sanno Pass on the border between Tochigi Pref. and Fukushima during Edo Period. It was once burnt down by Boshin Civil War but was rebuilt soon afterward on the site and then moved to here for preservation. This house is being used today as soba restaurant and cafe during all season. In fact I had a delicious soba noodle and Shingoro or rice ball with miso paste for lunch at here today.

Photo above shows today's Aizu Railway train running powerful through a snow field. From April 21 of this year, a brand new super express train "Revaty" is scheduled to connect Asakusa, Tokyo and Aizutajima, Minamiaizu Town directly without changing trains. This may greatly push tourism in this region.

Superb lake view with swans at Konanmachi, Koriyama, Feb. 16, 2017 (湖南町 青松浜の白鳥とレイクビュー 2017年2月16日)

P2163071 (560x420)
I visited today southern edge of Lake Inawashiro, where a number of swans stay during winter to early march every year. The location is called Seishohama Beach at Konanmachi, Koriyama City. A photo above shows today's morning view. Although it was cloudy above the lake, still a splendid view could be seen. Lake Inawashiro has been designated as a part of Japan Heritage because it has been a mother lake of Asaka Development as well as of the current Koriyama City.
