Visiting public baths at Yunohana Onsen, June 14, 2016 (湯ノ花温泉 湯巡り 2016年6月14日)

Today, I visited Yunohana hot spring resort in Minamiaizu Town. This is located near the starting point of Mt. Tashiro trail. I stayed here tonight heading for the mountain tomorrow morning. There are four public baths open to any visitors. Ishiyu pubic bath shown above is one of them with mixed bathing. I happened to bathe together with a local elderly woman who was 93 years old. She told me that this Ishiyu Bath is the best out of four and that she had kept her health with daily bathing without any doctor.

The second public bath was Tenjin-no-yu Bath as shown above. This was also a mixed bathing type, but this time I was the only one. The main bath was too hot to soak into, but the small one was moderate.

The third one was Yubata-no-yu Bath as shown above. This public bath was a separate type for men and women each.

And the last one was Koubo-no-yu as shown above. This was also a separate type with shower facility.

All the public baths use hot spring water which naturally wells up by itself, with no water being added, nor heating, nor any artificial things being added, nor water circulation, as the description above shows. They were really excellent hot spring baths.

To get to Yunohana Onsen (=hot spring resort), you can take a local bus from Aizutajima Station of Aizu Railway as shown above to Yunohanashimo Bus Stop.

I stayed at a private inn called Kitanoya which had an old dining house with thatched roof as shown above. The landlady was a smart and friendly woman. She prepared us delicious soba noodles.

Alpine flowers are beginning to bloom on Mt. Adatara, June 4, 2016 (安達太良山 に 花 の季節到来 2016年6月4日)

P6049251 (560x420)
This is a view toward the summit of Mt. Adatara as of today. The true sky above the mountain, as Chieko described, was very clear today. I chose the easiest way to get to the peak today with shuttle bus from JR Nihonmatsu Station to Okudake ropeway station. Then riding a gondola took me to the start point of the shortest trail to the summit of 1700m. It was 6km round trip.

P6049258 (560x420)
From the top of the mountain, I could see the whole surrounding world including Mt. Bandai as you can see on the left side above. On the top space, a stone monument which says "Hakkouichiu" and a second order triangulation point are placed.
Now, my focus this time was to see some alpine flowers in early summer. Some of them are shown below. Variety will increase toward middle and late June until early July.

First of all, pink flowers of Iwakagami were at their best time here, there and everywhere.

P6049231 (560x420)
White small flowers of Trientalis europeeas or Tsumatoriso in Japanese were also at its best.

P6049270 (560x420)
Tiny flowers of Minezuo in Japanese, which is commonly known as alpine azalea, were also in full bloom everywhere.

P6049276 (560x420)
White spherical flowers of Arcterica nana or Komebatsugazakura in Japanese have just started to bloom as shown above.

P6049292 (560x420)
At last, I found some red type of Enkianthus campanulatus or Benisarasa-Dodan in Japanese just started to bloom as shown above.

The exact route and locations are shown in the map below. The map can be scaled up and down with a click and scroll.

Bike ride around Lake Inawashiro, June 3, 2016 (猪苗代湖 チャリ一周 2016年6月3日)

P6039101 (560x420)
Today, I traveled around Lake Inawashiro by bike. I chose the shortest available path whose distance was 57km around. Photo above is a scene viewed from a cycling road along the northern shore of the lake near Hakuchohama. Rice field with plenty of water reflects image of Mt. Bandai covered with fresh green leaves. Some other impressive scenes and site today are shown below.

Along the eastern shore I found a group of large and old trees of hackberry at Hamaji village as shown above. These trees are designated as natural monument by Koriyama City. Some butterflies prefer hackberry in their larvae stage.
