Today I traced three traditional hydroelectric power stations powered by Asaka Canal in the outskirt (Atami-machi) of Koriyama. One of them, Takenouchi power station, located on a mountainside was surrounded by late cherry blossoms as shown above.

Numagami power station is located in the highest position close to Lake Inawashiro where the water comes from. You can see some of the canal water falling down right beside Numagami power station as shown above. This water is fed into Takenouchi station in the downstream.

Finally the water powers the third hydroelectric power station, Marumori power station as shown above. This station is located in the center of Bandai-Atami town.

Photo above shows main stream of Asaka Canal running through the backstreet of Bandai-Atami town. The stream then flows into a large area of Asaka plain divided into seven sub-channels.

Meanwhile, I stopped at an old Nakayamajuku Sta. of JR Ban-etsu West Line. This old station had been used for about 100 years until 1997 for switchback hill climbing. The first photo shows the old station. The second photo shows Ban-etsu West Line train traveling on the current track taken from the old station.

Superb view from Sakura Park in Miharu Town, April 23, 2017 (三春町 のさくらの公園 も素晴しいです 2017年4月23日)

Early this morning I visited Sakura Park or cherry blossoms park in Miharu Town. I found a superb view as shown above with colorful cherry blossoms surrounding Lake Sakura. Lake Sakura is a dam lake built on the Otakine River and it showed quiet blue water under a landmark bridge called Haruta-Ohashi. The location is four kilometers away from the famous Miharu Takizakura.

The exact route and locations are shown in the map below. The map can be scaled up and down with a click and scroll.

Today I walked around the central part of Shirakawa City viewing cherry blossoms which have survived from heavy gust of wind last night. Photo above was a view of Kominejo Castle surrounded by many cherry blossoms taken from JR Shirakawa Station platform. The castle was right next to the station in the north. I added an official character of Kominejo Castle, Komineshiro, on the picture.

Then I walked toward Nanko Park which was an oldest park in Japan completed in 1801. Shirakawa feudal domain lord Matsudaira Sadanobu built the park and he also planted a weeping cherry tree at the same time, which was called Rakuo cherry tree as shown above. It is located in the precinct of Nanko Shrine where the lord was enshrined. The tree is more than 200 years old.

Many other cherry trees were planted around Lake Nanko and some of the views today are shown above. Still snow-capped mountains in the pictures above are Nasu Mountains located in the west.

Finally I returned to the city center and had Shirakawa Ramen at lunch, which was a local specialty food. An excellent Shirakawa Ramen restaurant Kakoi is located within Rakura Square close to the station as shown above.
