Today, I walked around the vicinity of JR Koriyama Station and found some of the best autumn scenery in the city center: Hayama Falls and Kinto Memorial Hall. Both of these are part of Japan Heritage “Asaka Development” and are located within 15-minute walk from the station.
Photo shows Kinto Memorial Hall which was once a part of elementary school more than 100 years ago. Kinto elementary school was founded in 1873, the oldest in Koriyama. The building was used as a rest house for Meiji Emperor when he traveled across Tohoku region. It was designated recently as a part of Japan Heritage “Asaka Development.”

Photo above shows autumn Hayama Falls which was built in 1882 by Asaka Development pioneers. It has long been a commemorative monument for Asaka Canal completion. The water is divided from the main channel of Asaka Canal.

Today, I visited Adatara Valley Nature Trail on the foot of Mount Adatara. There were many waterfalls along the trail which went winding along the Karasugawa River. Photo above shows an autumn view near Senjo Rocks in the middle of the trail with plenty of waters flowing down the river. The trail itself was somewhat muddy with abundance of waters coming out of the ground.

Photo above shows a map of the trail which stood at the starting point. It was several minute walk from Okudake Bus Stop. And you can get here by local shuttle bus service (Fukushima Kotsu Bus) from JR Nihonmatsu Station during autumn high season. The trail was 5.2km round trip and the elevation was about 100m. The location is about 1000m above sea level. It took me 2.5hr round trip taking pictures.

Onogawa Fudo Falls & Grandeco slope at Urabandai, Oct. 17, 2017. (裏磐梯の小野川不動滝、グランデコ 2017年10月17日)

Photo above was an autumn view of Onogawa Fudo Falls at Urabandai, Kitashiobara Village as of today. The waterfall was about 40-meter high and was magnificent with its close-up view surrounded by autumn colors. Trail entrance to the falls is located about 6km from Goshikinuma-iriguchi bus stop which is about 30-minute local bus (Toto Bus) ride from JR Inawashiro Station. Onogawa Fudo Falls is about 1km or 20-minute walk from there. The waterfall which is a part of the Onogawa River flows into Lake Onogawa.

On the way to the falls along the edge of Lake Onogawa I found a colorful viewpoint of the lake as shown above.

I walked another 1km along uphill trail to Grandeco ski resort. There I found a fantastic autumn mountain view with sightseeing gondolas moving along the slope as shown above.

The exact route and locations are shown in the map below. The map can be scaled up and down with a click and scroll.
