Today I visited Kurashi-no-Denshogo Museum in Iwaki City. They are having special exhibition on traditional Japanese New Year decorations until the end of January in lunar calendar. Photo above was one of them in Igari Family house built in early Meiji period.

At Kurashi-no-Denshogo Museum old houses are moved to here for preservation of tradition from late Edo to early Meiji period, some 150 years ago. All the houses were from local districts of Iwaki area. Photo above shows a map of the old house zone.

Each family has its distinctive style of New Year decoration as shown below.

Photo above shows New Year decoration at Kawaguchi Family house.

Photo above shows that of Takagi Family house from late Edo period accompanied by Iwaki Dharma dolls.

Photo shows one of the old houses, Kawaguchi Family house built in 1871.

On the earth floor of Kawaguchi Family house, I found an extraordinary New Year decoration as shown above. It stood from the ground right up to a roof beam, decorated with pine and nandina branches as well as zigzag-shaped sacred paper.

A set of masks of Shichifukujin or seven lucky gods was placed at one of the houses as shown above. These were made at Dekoyashiki workshop in Koriyama.

Near the reception of the museum I found a display of traditional Iwaki Enobori flag as shown above. The flag, made more than 100 years ago, looked really powerful.

Today I visited Seishohama Beach of Lake Inawashiro in the outskirts of Koriyama. This has been one of the major flocking locations of migratory swans from Siberia every year. It was cloudy today but the swans were swimming or playing on the beach as shown in the picture above. In this picture alone swan count is about 40. There were some other groups nearby making the total count more than 100.

Here is a very short video where you can find the atmosphere and the familiar cries of swans.

On the way back I noticed near the beach a stone monument with a couple of lanterns for Mount Iide as shown above, which is located far away in Kitakata region. This may be because the mountain can be seen from here on a clear day.

If it were a clear day, I could have seen beautiful contrast of surrounding mountains and a blue sky as an example picture shown above which I took in March 2014. .

The location of Seishohama beach is at the southern edge of Lake Inawashiro. It is within Konanmachi district of Koriyama City. The public transportation to get there is to use a local Aizu Bus from JR Joko Station. From “Fukurafurumachi” bus stop you need 3km walk to the beach.

The exact route and locations are shown in a map below. The map can be scaled up and down with a click and scroll.

Tatsusawa Fudo Falls in Inawashiro, Nobember 6, 2020. (秋の達沢不動滝 2020年11月6日)

(# Tatsusawa Fudo Falls, Inawashiro, Nov. 6, 2020. #達沢不動滝 猪苗代 11/6/2020)
I visited Tatsusawa Fudo Falls in Inawashiro today. Photo above was how it looked like with multiple delicate and elegant streams of water falling down on a single gigantic rock. The water is of the Fudo River from Adatara Mountains.

To get to the falls, I took a local bus from JR Inawashiro Station. The bus took me to a bus terminal “Tatsusawa” as shown above. The neighborhood was a small hamlet of Tatsusawa.

I arrived at the bus terminal at 8:50 and then headed for the waterfall. I walked through refreshing countryside road as shown above with utmost autumn atmosphere.

In about 40-minute walk I came to a torii gate which was the entrance to the spiritual power spot area. Fudo King or Acala is enshrined near the waterfall.

I went through the gates and walked for a while when I found two description boards as shown above. They said that this path was used by the new government forces heading toward Aizuwakamatsu which became a fierce battleground against old shogunate forces at the time of Boshin Civil War in 1868. Also, they said the source of the waterfall is in Mt. Funamyojin which is one of Adatara Mountains.

I finally came to the last torii gate in front of the waterfall as shown above. Fudo King was enshrined right in front of the falls.

On the way back, I found a small bakery and pizza shop shortly before the bus terminal. The bus starts at 12:40 and I came to the shop about one hour earlier. The shop features wild yeast bread and pizza with no preservatives added. There seemed no other shops or restaurants in this small village. I decided to have a pizza lunch at the outdoor table as well as purchased a takeout bread. It was a healthy meal.

The exact route and locations are shown in a map below. The map can be scaled up and down with a click and scroll.
